₹95.00 - ₹900.00

Curry Leaf Rice Mix (famously known as Karuveppilai Podi in South India) is an aromatic, deeply flavorful, and iron-rich traditional spice blend. Designed to coat hot rice alongside a dollop of ghee or sesame oil, it is a staple lunchbox recipe prized for its ability to aid digestion, promote hair health, and deliver an instant burst of earthy flavor.

Key Health Benefits & Highlights

  • Iron & Antioxidant Powerhouse: Curry leaves are packed with iron, folic acid, and powerful plant compounds that combat oxidative stress.

  • Digestive Aid: Spices like cumin, pepper, and hing combined with curry leaves stimulate digestive fire.

  • Shelf-Stable Convenience: Can be stored in an airtight container for weeks, making it an essential quick-meal fix.

Traditional Recipe: Karuveppilai Podi

Ingredients:

  • Fresh Curry Leaves: 2 cups (washed, patted completely dry of surface moisture)

  • Chana dal (Bengal gram): 2 tbsp

  • Urad dal (Black gram): 2 tbsp

  • Coriander seeds: 1 tbsp

  • Cumin seeds (Jeera): 1 tsp

  • Black pepper: 1 tsp

  • Dry red chillies: 6 to 8 (adjust for spice preference)

  • Tamarind: A small marble-sized piece (optional, adds a subtle tang that balances bitterness)

  • Asafoetida (Hing): A generous pinch

  • Oil: 2 tsp (sesame oil or cooking oil)

  • Salt: To taste

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Dry the Leaves: Thoroughly wash fresh curry leaves and spread them on a clean cloth until every bit of surface water evaporates. (Any trapped moisture will reduce shelf life).

  2. Roast the Spices & Dal: Heat a teaspoon of oil in a heavy pan. Roast the chana dal, urad dal, dry red chillies, coriander seeds, and black pepper on medium-low flame until golden brown and aromatic. Add the cumin seeds and tamarind right at the end, sauté for a few seconds, and remove to a cooling plate.

  3. Crisp the Curry Leaves: In the same pan, add another teaspoon of oil and toss in the dry curry leaves. Sauté on a low flame until they turn crisp and brittle (they should crumble easily between your fingers). Turn off the heat.

  4. Grind to Powder:

    • Allow all ingredients to cool completely.

    • Grind them together with salt and asafoetida into a semi-coarse or fine powder.

  5. How to Serve: Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of Karuveppilai Podi with hot cooked rice and a teaspoon of fresh ghee or gingelly (sesame) oil. Enjoy with simple fried items like potato or raw banana chips.
