Neem oil is a vegetable oil pressed from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), widely valued for its powerful insecticidal, antifungal, and skin-healing properties.
Key Applications & Benefits
-
Organic Plant Protection: Contains azadirachtin, an active compound that disrupts the life cycle of garden pests (mealybugs, aphids, spider mites) and combats fungal infections like powdery mildew.
-
Scalp & Hair Care: Clears dandruff, relieves itchy scalp, and controls lice when diluted in carrier oils like coconut or sesame oil.
-
Skin Therapy: Rich in fatty acids and vitamin E; treats stubborn acne, eczema, and minor skin infections due to strong antibacterial action.
Types & Grades
-
Cold-Pressed / Raw Neem Oil: Dark, cloudy, with a strong garlic-sulfur aroma. Retains all bioactive compounds; best for therapeutic skin, hair, and traditional uses.
-
Clarified Hydrophobic Extract: Processed oil with azadirachtin removed; commonly sold in commercial garden sprays as a broad-spectrum fungicide and miticide.
Safe Dilution & Usage
-
For Plants: Mix 1 tsp pure neem oil + 1/2 tsp liquid dish soap (as an emulsifier) per 1 liter of warm water. Spray early morning or late evening to prevent leaf burn.
-
For Skin & Hair: Never apply pure cold-pressed neem oil directly to sensitive skin. Dilute to 2–5% in a base oil (1 drop neem oil to 10–20 drops carrier oil).
